[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Kanaya Maryam
Age: 15 (about 7 sweeps)
Gender: F
Canon: Homestuck
Timeline: Aact 6, Intermission 5 - Shortly after destroying "Can Town" (starting at this page) with a several destructive kicks; and after denying Rose's drunken question.
Background:
To the wiki!
Personality:
First and foremost, Kanaya is a caring, empathetic troll whose kind behavior stands out from the typical norm that her race exhibits. This isn't to say that she can't get her hands dirty and absolutely wreck someone if she wanted to, but simply that her typical behavior is on the nicer side of things. For trolls, pale affection is the friendliest, the most supportive sort of affection around. Much like a best friend that you can turn to to help with your problems, Kanaya was the one the others wouldn't ever hesitate to turn to when they were in trouble; to the point where she was referred to as the "village two wheeled device when it comes to auspisticing" by Eridan. Not that this opportunity was used particularly often, but it's core to who she is. Relevantly, Vriska seeking solutions to issues while Kanaya perceived the behavior as seeking friendliness or more inevitably led to a large, unfortunate misunderstanding.
So let's keep focusing on her kinder side, shall we? Kanaya has a tendency to be particularly verbose, though not to the extent that Aranea does, and has a certain level of self-consciousness that goes alongside that habit. Her empathy makes her hesitant to burden others with her interests and desires to discuss topics as deeply as possible. When she realizes that she is indeed rambling, she becomes immediately self aware and apologetic of the behavior. Several times, while rambling, she was reminded by Rose that that was precisely what she was doing before she'd had a chance to notice it herself. Sometimes her ramblings get the better of her, sometimes they don't. Without a doubt, if she had a journal it would be full of ramblings that she hadn't had an opportunity to get out herself. She's a thinker, focusing on the brighter things in life rather than the negative ones.
This behavior, this habit of thinking positively directly affects how she treats others. It isn't merely that she prefers thinking of brighter things, but that they are what she truly believes in. Such is the reason why other trolls seek her out rather than fear what she has to say. In the case of Karkat, despite his mistakes she keeps faith that he is doing his all and she's pleased with that; mistakes aren't something she'll hold against him, she respects that he can learn from them and not ignore them. In the case of Eridan, prior to certain deadly events, she was willing to reassure his concerns about the Matriorb and its hopeful purpose and allow him to assist. Following the deadly events, she has yet to see him again, but she would not meet him again with anger. Such is precisely how her mind works, she would be willing to extend that possibility, that chance for things to be well again, the chance to resume friendship despite what he'd done.
Of course, that doesn't mean she hadn't been angry. We'll move on to the aforementioned "deadly events", specifically the ones where Eridan and Sollux fought (and Eridan won), where Eridan blew a hole through Feferi and killed her, blew up the Matriorb, and then followed that by blasting a hole through Kanaya as well. At the time, it was entirely obvious why Kanaya returned a little more than annoyed with him. Eye for an eye, as it were, and with the reasoning that she'd rather not have a hole blown through her again, she chainsawed him in half. Literally bisected just above the waist with a single swing. She had absolutely no problem with doing so, and didn't even hesitate to put on lipstick coated in his blood immediately after; bear in mind, her chainsaw condenses down into a tube of green lipstick, and the chainsaw was coated in blood, thus so was the lipstick.
Relevantly, she also had no problem with chainsawing off Tavros' legs after he'd horribly broken them from Vriska dropping him off of a cliff. Equius had prepared a pair of robotic legs to replace the broken ones, so some dirty work was involved in the transition. It was certain that doing so was beneficial for Tavros, thus her actions were in his best interests despite the violent nature of the act.
So why the difference in behavior? What difference? There isn't one. The notion that a kind, caring individual can't get their hands dirty or do what needs to be done is false. Kanaya is, hands down, one who acts in order to support forward movement for those she cares about. In the interests of preventing any further outbursts or destructive actions, and simply for getting back at him for nearly killing her, Eridan needed to die. Had he not blown up the Matriorb, despite having agreed only moments earlier to accompany her and use it, and then blown a hole through her abdomen, she might have been far more willing to work things out with him with words. Though given that her words in the past with Vriska hadn't gone over as well in their failed relationship, a part of her mind would have still considered abandoning words. Actions speak far louder.
Let's move to that, shall we? Kanaya is, when you step back and look at the big picture, still young and still learning. She's had a past of youthful mistakes and learning experiences that have helped shape her decision-making process and her approach to other trolls. Vriska had turned to her with pale intentions when Kanaya herself had desired flushed affections, which resulted in a series of messy mistakes and eventually led to the two having nothing more to do with eachother. Kanaya couldn't get past Vriska seeing her as a friend; at least until later. Kanaya had, admittedly, given up on flushed feelings for Vriska by the time she'd prepared to reciprocate. Vriska seeing Kanaya chainsaw Eridan in half right before her eyes had pretty much stolen her heart on the spot. By that point, Kanaya's flushed feelings were already starting to be aimed in a different direction.
Now for potentially the most important thing: Rose. Kanaya was one who tended to look up to others, to try to be like them or more like what they would like, and to do things that she could to help make them happy. Early on in the game, Kanaya began using a Walkthrough for Sburb/Sgrub that had been written by none other than Rose. At the time, Kanaya imagined Rose and idolized her as an amazing troll that she aspired to be. She'd even been linked to Rose as her patron troll; which meant that the two had many, many opportunities to speak throughout the course of the game. Why is this important? Because Kanaya found a role model, learned her secrets, became friends with her, and developed feelings and fell in love with her. Despite being a human, a strange alien race that lacked horns and seemed surprisingly weak, Rose had an amazing analytical mind that surpassed even her own. Sharing interests and actively seeking out discussions regarding the nature of the game and also each other, Rose's actions taught Kanaya a surprising amount in a short span of time. In a way, much of Kanaya's maturity and ability to put her past behind her came from Rose.
Kanaya, unfortunately, became witness to an unfortunate habit of Rose's surfacing during their three-year-trip cross-session. Drinking. Rose's confession to Kanaya, and kiss, occurred while Rose was inebriated, though it was an honest confession and thus led to the two successfully dating and becoming matesprits; despite that Rose is human. Though left "off-screen", it is assumed that Kanaya and Rose have spent considerable time together to themselves, given Karkat's complaint that he never sees them. In this time, Kanaya is doing what she does best: being supportive, being optimistic, and learning. She isn't going to condemn Rose for her behavior; though Rose's negligence regarding something she'd been tasked with before the end of the three-year-trip is a cause for annoyance. Despite the anger, Kanaya refused to break up with Rose over it; because after all, mistakes happen. The brighter side is that things can get better.
On that final note, Kanaya is never one to undervalue another individual. Nor is she one to hold things against another individual. The past may be the past, but it is the choices here, now that determine what the future will bring. Meeting every current opportunity while burdened with the past will result in constant repetition and no progression. Think positive, be supportive. Let her ramble on and on to you about it, if you'll listen.
Why is your character a good fit for the setting of Soul Campaign, and what will they do once they are in the game?
Kanaya would participate and support the war because it's the right thing to do. The fact that her friends from home, and other trolls too, are residents of Death City already will only spur her on to do well. She'll be concerned for the events at home, of course, but the task at hand must come first. After all, it's not like she can leave, so why not give it her all? The sooner the war is won, the sooner she can go home.
List the abilities your character will still have in Soul Campaign:
Aside from being a troll and thus having above-human level strength and mortality, Kanaya will NOT remain a "Rainbow Drinker". She will retain the lighter skin tone that came with it, but she will no longer seek out the blood of others nor will she be able to make herself luminescent at will.
List the weaknesses your character will gain (or lose) in Soul Campaign:
None.

[ SAMPLES ]
First-Person
[ Video | Early Morning ]
[ The video begins, showing the sunrise. Kanaya begins speaking without turning the camera to face herself. ]
Sunrise, I find, is an under-appreciated or even dreaded event most days. Sunsets, meanwhile, are met with appreciation.
[ After a few moments of showing the sunrise, she turns the video to face herself. ]
There are those who rise with the sunrise and rest with the sunset, and there are those who do just the opposite. Each will always dread the one that comes first, it seems, and anticipate the one before they rest again. [ A little smile. ] Neither is wrong. I am an anomaly, of course. I meet both the sunrise and the sunset with equal appreciation. Today, I bring you a sight of one sunrise. Perhaps you'll all see tomorrow's for yourselves?
[ With that thoughtful note, she ends the video. ]
Third-Person
Kanaya wasn't one to find herself waking up facedown on a floor. Especially when she'd been resting comfortably prior to that. Had she fallen to the floor, had she been placed there, or was she not there at all? The answer was the last one, of course, she was no longer on the meteor en route to the other session... She was on a floor. With a considerable number of other people. She didn't have time to identify anyone else, not with her eyes slightly glazed over from rest and the sudden jarring sound from the video feed.
Thankfully, the video feed offered nothing but answers. Given what she'd learned while playing her own game, the words on the screen came as no surprise. More than that, there came a reassurance. This place, these people had broken through time and space to bring everyone together. Already it made sense that none of these people were from her universe, since, after all, everyone that she didn't know from her universe was dead. This was another game. If they'd been brought here so easily, so simply, then they could just as easily be put back. She could just as easily be put back. She wasn't missing anything by being here, it was just a temporary detour.
Thoughtfully considering her options, she slowly rose to her feet. If the choice was fight and win versus lose and die, there was really only one clear thing to do, wasn't there? Prepare, fight, win. Before that, though, she'd need information. She'd need to talk with someone who was already here. Already she was thinking of questions, reviewing the information she already had in her mind. This was a war, there were people from all different universes here, and that meant that there was indeed a chance that there could be people from her own universe.
There was no despair in her eyes, no fear. There was only motivation, determination to succeed.
